Lan Kwai Fong

From the tram stop in Hong Kong it’s a short walk to the party district, Lan Kwai Fong. This area consists of a few streets just above Central and is packed with bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants. 14 years ago we worked during one summer at Mad Dogs, a pub catering to expatriates. It was a summer of hard work, early mornings, late evenings and plenty of hangovers. Fantasies of dropping back in and having a beer were dashed as it no longer exists. Instead we found a small bar where we could sit and people watch. At dusk the place really gets busy with people. There’s a real mix of suits going home, locals going about their business, people going out for the night and tourists probably looking for a more accessible bar, most of the area caters well to English language and palate if you like Pret or Starbucks.
Close by at the top of the area is Gunga din’s, an Indian restaurant where we had some excellent curry for dinner.
