Down and out in LA

Downtown LA is one of those places that you'd think is a hip and exciting place to be. So far I haven't found it, unless you hang out at trendy rooftop bar in The Standard hotel. Unfortunately I associate the entire downtown experience with this one bar. Is there anywhere else?
